Our Marra Community:

Marra Hall:

In 1910, the Department of Lands officially gazetted an area of 15 acres as "The Marra Recreation Reserve." This followed an initial application submitted back in 1898. The grounds and amenities are managed by local Trustees appointed by the Department of Lands, each serving a term of seven years.

Over the years, the reserve has hosted a wide variety of activities, including picnic race meetings, rodeos, gymkhanas, polocrosse, tennis, dances, CWA functions, cricket, and school events.

The original section of Marra Hall was constructed in 1934. Subsequent extensions have added a kitchen, dressing room, verandah, and showers to accommodate the tennis club.

Marra Creek Public School traces its origins to the old jockey shed of the race club, located on the left in the accompanying photograph. In the late 1960s, local residents approached the Department of Education with the goal of establishing a school in the community. Initially, in 1969 and 1970, parents near the hall jointly employed Clare Backhouse (later McConochie) to supervise correspondence lessons.

In 1971, the Department of Education made the first official teaching appointment to Marra Creek Public School, which enroled 24 students. Later that year, a bus run was introduced from the westerly direction of the hall, making the school accessible to more children.

At the start, the school’s resources were modest—consisting only of chairs, desks, a blackboard, and chalk—but it has grown significantly since then.

Parents continued to advocate for a proper school building, and in 1974, a building arrived in two halves and was erected on a site just east of the Recreation Reserve.

Since then, the school has seen numerous improvements, including the addition of a phone connection and a ground tank to support the establishment of gardens.

Marra CWA:

The first meeting of the Marra Country Women’s Association (CWA) was held at Marra Hall on 27th November 1937. In 1959, a purpose-built Rest Room was constructed and officially opened, serving as an important facility for the community.

Over the years, the Marra CWA has been a dedicated and valuable contributor to the local community. Notably, in 1947, they were responsible for purchasing the 32-volt power plant for the Hall, significantly enhancing its functionality.

Since their establishment in 1937, the CWA has consistently organised a Christmas Tree event every year, a cherished tradition that continues to this day.
